The Economic and Social History of the Parish of Haverton Hill, County Durham, by Kelvin Street
Appendix 1: Occupations of Haverton Hill residents 1851-1881
The statistics below show the percentage of the Haverton Hill workforce employed in each main occupation taken from census returns for the period 1851 to 1881.

The glass works was the main employer with 37% of the workforce in 1851. The glass works was short lived and went through a series of crises, which must have had economic and social effects on these workers and their families.
Steel was to be the main long-term form of employment. The Robinsons Iron Works provided employment for 16% of the workforce in 1851. The Clarence Steel Works was then established and from 1861, is the main source of work for the Haverton Hill workforce. Steel becomes pre-eminent employing 40% of the workforce in 1871 and 1881.

A commercial sector of shopkeepers and tradesmen had developed by 1851. Professional people were always few in number, never rising above 6% in the 19th century or indeed in the early 20th century.
The railway provided steady employment for small but significant number of workers. Farming always provided some jobs but was showing signs of decline in 1881 as the settlement and industry expanded at the expense of agricultural land.

The census information gives a remarkable consistency in types of occupation:

Steel, 1861 to 1881, employed between 32 to 40% of the workforce.
Rail, 1861 to 1881 employed between 9 to 10% of the workforce.
The commercial sector, 1851 and from 1871 to 1881 employed between 10 to 12% of the workforce.
Miscellaneous occupations, including trades people, 1851 to 1881, employed between 22 to 26% of the workforce.

Overall, these graphs show evidence of a working class, industrial community, relying heavily on steel and associated trades. Steel and other heavy Industries continued to be the staple form of employment in the 20th century. During the depression of the 1930s the settlements’ workers would be badly hit by redundancy and closures.
